SynBio4ALL Africa Founder Sebunya Emmanuel Kato speaking to students at Makerere University

SynBio4ALL Africa is pleased to share that our Founder, Sebunya Emmanuel Kato, visited Makerere University in Uganda on 11 August 2026 to deliver an introductory talk on synthetic biology to students.

The session introduced students to the basic principles of synthetic biology and its growing role in research, innovation, health, agriculture, sustainability, and community-driven problem solving. This engagement was especially important because synthetic biology is still not widely taught in many academic settings across Africa, despite its potential to support locally relevant scientific and technological solutions.

During the talk, our Founder encouraged students to form teams and participate in the iGEM Community, where young people can gain practical experience, collaborate with peers across the world, and develop solutions using synthetic biology. Students were also invited to join the SynBio4ALL Africa community as part of a wider effort to strengthen access, mentorship, and collaboration in synthetic biology across the continent.

This visit reflects SynBio4ALL Africa's continued commitment to expanding synthetic biology education and building a more inclusive innovation ecosystem for African students, researchers, and young scientists.

More support is still needed to grow the synthetic biology community in Africa. SynBio4ALL Africa remains ready to take the lead in creating opportunities, connecting communities, and promoting responsible synthetic biology education across the continent.

We invite universities, educators, partners, and organizations to collaborate with SynBio4ALL Africa as we expand access to synthetic biology education, mentorship, and innovation opportunities across Africa.
