Advancing synthetic biology in African academia: institutional barriers, capacity gaps, and the impact of a pilot online training program
A peer-reviewed study of 140 students, lecturers, and researchers across 17 African countries, combining a multi-country survey of awareness, perceptions, and barriers with an evaluation of a pilot online synthetic biology course. The findings give evidence-based direction for building inclusive, context-driven innovation ecosystems in African academia.

A mini-review proposing a systems-based framework to address biosecurity challenges posed by synthetic nucleic acid technology in the context of advancing AI capabilities. The authors present a four-tier governance escalation model linking risk profiles to proportionate policy responses, arguing that sequence-centred governance alone is no longer sufficient given computational design tools, distributed synthesis capacity, and uneven regulatory implementation across jurisdictions.

It can be the driving force to development of better products and at the same time a big boost to local production of common chemicals, medicines.
My main concern is the ethics. How do we protect the vulnerable who are most likely to be guinea pigs for the innovations.
It requires some advanced skills that are not available for undergraduate programs like in Biotechnology.
