Supporting Transformative Ideas: The Mak-SynBio4ALL iGEM Team 2025
One of our flagship mentorship engagements is with the Mak-SynBio4ALL iGEM Team 2025 from Makerere University, Uganda. This remarkable team is pioneering a synthetic biology solution to two of today's most urgent global issues: climate change and malnutrition.
Their project involves engineering the carbon-fixing cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus to biosynthesize L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid that supports protein synthesis, brain function, and immune health.
Impact & Innovation
In an era where rising CO₂ levels reduce the nutritional quality of staple crops—a phenomenon known as the nutrient dilution effect—this innovation couldn't be more timely. By developing a carbon-negative tryptophan production platform, the Mak-SynBio4ALL team is tackling malnutrition while contributing to atmospheric carbon reduction.
